Eclipse Phase - Apocalypse
Celebrity debutante, psychosurgeon, and entrepreneur in search of identity

- I’ve done some pretty effective work for Project Ozma through the espionage arm of CRS. They currently owe me a favor and we keep the line of communications open.
- My regular morph has several modifications built into it to customize it to my tastes:
- The most important modification gets its own line item. I have an
+emergency farcasterin my regular morph. I think the reasons for that are pretty straightforward.
- I maintain a state of the art psychosurgery suite on Octavia, which also hosts the primary server for my VR simulspace where our work takes place.
You are known as someone with a genuine sense of generosity. At any time, you may spend hold generated by wealth or fame, 1 for 1, to have a non-hostile NPC:
- believe a plausible lie
- do you a favor
- lend you something useful
- break a minor law for you
- tell you something useful or interesting
You have developed extensive investments and agents whose job it is to keep you in credits. At the beginning of the session, roll +Cognition or +Savvy (your choice) to see how your fortune is faring. On a 10 +, you have surplus on hand for your needs. On a 7-9, you have surplus, but choose one want. On a miss, your investments are in want. The GM will choose one or more. The precise values of your surplus and want are determined by creating your investments below.
Choose 2 Benefits:
Your investments are extensive, but thinly spread. Surplus: 1-hold, want: needy
Your investments are compact and well administered. Remove one want.
Your investments profit from violent conflict. Surplus: 1-hold, want: embattled
You’ve invested in the information trade. Surplus: +boosted on one roll to access the mesh or assess the situation, want: infiltrated
You’ve invested in physical resources, perhaps a planet rich in minerals or a refinery. Surplus: 1-hold, want: immobile
You’re a minor shareholder in another, larger organization. Surplus: 1-hold, want: obligation
Your people have access to rare or specialized technology. Surplus: 1-hold, want: idle
Then Choose 1 Weakness:
Your investments are always working for you, or deeply concealed. Want: unreliable
Your investments are micromanaged and rely entirely on you for everything. Want: desperation
Your investments are subject to bullying or blackmail. Want: reprisals
Your investments are in large companies with multiple masters. Want: obligation
You may spend Surplus hold, 1 for 1, to gain +1forward on any roll to procure something. If your Resources stat is at +1 or less, you may spend 3-hold to increase it by 1.
For advancement, choose 2 new benefits, or take 1 new benefit and remove 1 weakness.
When you engage in psychosurgery upon a neural backup, fork, AGI, or emulated ego in your carefully controlled simulspace, roll+Cognition. On a 10+, choose 2 (the same choice can be taken twice). On a 7-9, choose 1:
- Fork Integration: re-integrate a fork successfully
- Memory Editing: alter, or delete any one memory or related set of memories
- Behavioral modification: edit or delete certain behaviors or impulses
- Deep Learning: Grant the subject 1 Experience.
- Interrogation: Learn the complete answer to any one question
- Psychotherapy: Add or Remove one check from the Sanity Track.
- Take Care: Grant the subject +boosted on the subsequent sanity move (see below)
The subject then rolls the sanity move. In addition to the normal effects, on a 10 +, the subject may choose whether to keep the changes or reject them. On a 7-9, the changes take effect, but the subject may choose one change that is only temporary. It will fade in a few weeks. On a failure, the changes take effect permanently, and the subject marks one check on the sanity track as normal.
You’re a famous personality, and your XP exploits are followed by many. You get 2-juggling, 3 paying gigs, and 1 obligation gig. Whenever there’s a stretch of downtime in play, or between sessions, choose a number of your gigs to work. Choose no more than your juggling. Roll+Savvy. On a 10 +, you get profit from each of the gigs you chose. On a 7-9, you get profit from one of your gigs; if you chose more gigs, you get catastrophe from the rest. On a miss, catastrophe all around. The gigs you aren’t working give you neither hold nor catastrophe, but if you avoid your obligation gig, the GM gets one hold over you. Whenever you get a new gig, you also get +1juggling.
Choose 3 paying gigs (profit / catastrophe):
Art (1-hold / critiqued)
Bodyguarding (1-hold / embattled)
Counter-espionage (1-hold / infiltrated)
Deliveries (1-hold / bushwhacked)
Enforcement (1-hold / overthrown)
Espionage (1-hold / deceived)
Extreme Sports (1-hold / injured)
Infiltration (1-hold / discovered)
Mercenary Work (1-hold / embattled)
Murder for hire (2-hold / embattled)
Sex (1-hold / entangled)
And choose 1 obligation gig: (profit / catastrophe)
Avoiding Someone (You keep well clear / they catch you in a bad spot)
Paying debts (you keep up with them / they come due)
Protecting someone (nothing bad happens to them / they’re gone)
Pursuing luxury (beauty in your life / you wind up in a bad spot)
Maintaining your rep (you keep your reputation / you cross a line)
Seeking answers (you get a clue / you chase a red herring)
You may spend any hold granted by profit, 1-for-1, to gain +1forward to a procure something roll. If your Rep stat is at +1 or less, you may spend 3-hold to increase it by 1.
For advancement, gain +2 gigs, or +1 gig and remove your obligation gig.
Whenever you roll Psychosurgery, you are +boosted.

Aeryn Taft-Crowley was the scion of the impossibly wealthy and powerful Taft-Crowley family, a lineage deeply vested in bioengineering and media hypercorps prior to the Fall. Despite having interests throughout the Inner Rim, the Taft-Crowleys maintained their primary residence on Earth prior to the Fall and most of Aeryn’s nuclear family had the misfortune of watching the world disintegrate from a first-class vantage point. The Taft-Crowleys almost to a man escaped from Earth without major catastrophe, thanks to their tremendous affluence and extensive connections. Almost.
Aeryn was unable to rendezvous with the shuttle designed to facilitate his off-world escape during the Titan-engineered holocaust. For a year, her family assumed the worst after having no contact with Aeryn — all backups on Earth had been lost and the only off-world redundancy for Aeryn Taft-Crowley had gone up in flames in a botched mercenary strike by a rival hypercorp prior to any opportunity to resleeve his ego. The Taft-Crowleys had to face a long-forgotten reality for their bloodline: actual death. Until the miracle.
Roughly 17 months after the Fall, a farcaster located on Earth transmitted a package to the Taft-Crowleys in their new Martian habitat, a package that claimed to bear an alpha fork of Aeryn Taft-Crowley. The only thing certain of the transmission was its origin planet; the family was unable to determine its precise location on Earth’s surface, nor the reason for its peculiar timing. Understandably, the response was guarded, even running a full gamut of negative suspicious and angry emotions, as the fork was submitted to a lengthy scrutiny process within several different virtual environs before a team of experts reached the conclusion that the fork was largely uncorrupted and, apparently, created roughly 48 hours after Aeryn missed her shuttle. The contents of those 48 hours, however, were garbled and unclear and, of course, the existence of the Alpha in the first place left an unspeakable question among the Taft-Crowleys: What had happened to Aeryn Taft-Crowley after he created this alpha fork?
Aeryn, for her part, was eventually resleeved into her preferred model of Sylph morph (which tended to vary in gender) and began a maturation process of extensive education in psychosurgical technique. While the secret of his re-emergence has been kept largely within the family, he has gained great fame as an XP psychosurgeon operating in simulpace on the criminally insane and celebrities with great precision and a skillful aplomb. Her start-up hypercorp, Cortical Redemption Systematics (“CRS”), has garnered a massive following on the mesh for its media programming that focuses on these amazing interventions, which often see the patients reclaim buried memories or embrace behavioral modification with startling clarity. Aeryn is a consummate performer while working her craft virtually and the VR spaces in which she does her work are carefully tailored by her (in a fashion almost always documented for programming) for optimal sensory reception by both patient and audience.
CRS is also, very quietly, in the business of lending the services of Aeryn and a number of his best technicians for espionage and counterespionage efforts and has garnered the favor of several factions among Transhumanity for doing discreet, clean work. Aeryn, for her part, largely buries her fears and frustrations stemming from her ignorance of her “gap” period; it’s quite clear that his work is ultimately an act of self-interest, a hope that if his vision into the transhuman mind becomes piercing enough, he may one day be able to find bridge that gap and learn what truly happened to him and who he may yet become.
